True North Health Clinic is excited to announce that we now offer Tele-Health Substance Abuse services by our highly trained Licensed Professionals and Medical Staff. With the opportunity to expand services via the internet, this has removed barriers to accessing these crucial services. This allows more individuals the opportunity to benefit from our services no matter where they live. Tele-Health offers individuals seamless continuity of care and promotes positive outcomes.

True North offers an integrated approach to care; looking at you as a whole person and not an illness. True North offers psychiatric services for individuals ages 5 and older. True North offers substance abuse services for individuals ages 12 and older. No referral is necessary. Individuals are not required to be a current Intercept Health client to receive services

Dr. Joseph W. Isklandar
Medical Director
Dr. Joseph W. Iskandar was born in Egypt and studied at Cairo University before relocating to the United States in 2000. He graduated from New Jersey City University with a B.S. cum laude in 2005. Dr. Iskandar received his D.O. from the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2010 with honors. Dr. Iskandar then began a general psychiatry residency at Virginia Tech-Carilion School of Medicine (VTC), followed by a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship. He received multiple award including Top Hat Award from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Practice Based Learning Award and Fellow of the Year Award from VTC.
Dr. Iskandar is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as well as board certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Iskander specializes in medication management of children, adolescents and adults who suffer from mental illness. He views medication management as a collaborative process with the patient, parents, psychotherapist and professionals. He believes in systematic and careful follow up to allow for the optimization of treatment.
Brigette Funk
Brigette Funk graduated from Virginia Tech University in 2011 earning her Master’s degree in Counselor Education. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families, in a variety of settings including homes, schools, outpatient, and the community. Brigette enjoys providing therapy for individuals with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, behavior problems, marital/family conflict, and those struggling with major life transitions. She utilizes an integrative theoretical approach in combination with active listening, psychoeducation, mindfulness, and art therapy techniques while providing unconditional positive regard to prompt and encourage individual change.
Denise Yopp
Director of Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Services
Denise graduated from Radford University with a Master of Science in Counselor Education in May 2014. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Virginia, as well as being licensed in North Carolina and Maryland. She is also a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. Over the course of her career, she has helped medical and counseling practices grow in the number of clients they were able to provide services to and successfully serve high risk populations.
Denise has worked in the field of addiction since 1991, ranging from criminal justice to residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment. She has provided both individual counseling and group services. She also has experience in psychiatric hospitalization and treatment, as well as managing psychiatric medicine services in the corrections population.
Denise has specialized in providing services to underserved and high-risk populations, including those with addiction and criminal justice clients. She offers a holistic, trauma-informed approach in working with clients.
Erika Hughes, LPC
Erika Hughes graduated from Virginia Tech University in 2005 earning her Masters degree in Counselor Education. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 13 years of experience working with adults, adolescents, and families, specializing in treating substance abuse, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and grief/loss. She is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing). Erika uses a combination of person-centered, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral therapy approaches by utilizing active listening, teaching, encouraging and motivating clients to elicit lasting change.
