True North Health Clinic is excited to announce that we now offer Tele-Psych services to multiple office sites throughout the state. This allows more individuals the opportunity to benefit from our services no matter where they live.

True North provides Tele-Psych services in all of Intercept Health's Community Homes, FreshStart and YouthQuest facilities. True North Health Clinic also provides Tele-Psych services to select school sites in order to better serve their students, reduce transportation barriers and time away from the classroom. This service provides our youth the opportunity to continue receiving care from the same practitioner upon returning to their community. Tele-Psych offers our youth seamless continuity of care and promotes positive outcomes.

Our mission is to provide the highest quality of care to all individuals who with mental health needs and to transform lives impacted by addiction through a comprehensive, structure therapeutic program. 

True North offers psychiatric services for individuals ages 5 and older.​ True North offers substance abuse services for individuals ages 12 and older. No referral is necessary.  Individuals are not required to be a current Intercept Health client to receive services

Dr. Joseph W. Isklandar

Medical Director

Dr. Joseph W. Iskandar was born in Egypt and studied at Cairo University before relocating to the United States in 2000.   He graduated from New Jersey City University with a B.S. cum laude in 2005. Dr. Iskandar received his D.O. from the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2010 with honors.  Dr. Iskandar then began a general psychiatry residency at Virginia Tech-Carilion School of Medicine (VTC), followed by a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship.  He received multiple award including Top Hat Award from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Practice Based Learning Award and Fellow of the Year Award from VTC.

Dr. Iskandar is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as well as  board certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  Dr. Iskander specializes in medication management of children, adolescents and adults who suffer from mental illness.  He views medication management as a collaborative process with the patient, parents, psychotherapist and professionals.  He believes in systematic and careful follow up to allow for the optimization of treatment.

Brigette Funk

Brigette Funk graduated from Virginia Tech University in 2011 earning her Master’s degree in Counselor Education. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families, in a variety of settings including homes, schools, outpatient, and the community.  Brigette enjoys providing therapy for individuals with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, behavior problems, marital/family conflict, and those struggling with major life transitions.  She utilizes an integrative theoretical approach in combination with active listening, psychoeducation, mindfulness, and art therapy techniques while providing unconditional positive regard to prompt and encourage individual change.

Mary Vandergrift

Director of Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Services

Mary Vandergrift graduated from Jefferson College and Health Sciences who earned her BS in Biomedical Sciences in 2003 and in 2005 earned her BS as a Physician Assistant. Mary later received her Master’s in Business Administration from Averett University in 2009. She is a member of American College of Healthcare Executives and has been in a Director Role since 2014. Mary Vandergrift is a board-certified Physician Assistant who has been working in the field of psychiatric and addiction medicine since 2006. She specializes in providing psychiatric and addiction care to children, adolescents and adults who suffer from psychiatric and/or substance abuse conditions. She is Suboxone Certified and MAT trained. She believes in offering her patients an integrated approach to care, looking at the whole person not just the illness.

Erika Hughes, LPC

Erika Hughes graduated from Virginia Tech University in 2005 earning her Masters degree in Counselor Education. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 13 years of experience working with adults, adolescents, and families, specializing in treating substance abuse, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and grief/loss. She is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing). Erika uses a combination of person-centered, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral therapy approaches by utilizing active listening, teaching, encouraging and motivating clients to elicit lasting change.
