True North offers psychiatric services for individuals ages 5 and older.​ True North offers substance abuse services for individuals ages 12 and older. No referral is necessary.

Dr. Joseph W. Iskandar

Medical Director

Dr. Joseph W. Iskandar was born in Egypt and studied at Cairo University before relocating to the United States in 2000.   He graduated from New Jersey City University with a B.S. cum laude in 2005. Dr. Iskandar received his D.O. from the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2010 with honors.  Dr. Iskandar then began a general psychiatry residency at Virginia Tech-Carilion School of Medicine (VTC), followed by a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship.  He received multiple award including Top Hat Award from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Practice Based Learning Award and Fellow of the Year Award from VTC.

Dr. Iskandar is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as well as  board certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  Dr. Iskander specializes in medication management of children, adolescents and adults who suffer from mental illness.  He views medication management as a collaborative process with the patient, parents, psychotherapist and professionals.  He believes in systematic and careful follow up to allow for the optimization of treatment.

Mary Vandergrift

Director of Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Services

Mary graduated from Jefferson College and Health Sciences who earned her BS in Biomedical Sciences in 2003 and in 2005 earned her BS as a Physician Assistant. She later received her Master’s in Business Administration from Averett University in 2009. She is a member of American College of Healthcare Executives and has been in a Director Role since 2014. Over the course of her career she has been able to build medical and counseling practices to successfully service high risk populations. 

Mary is a board-certified Physician Assistant who has been working in the field of psychiatric and addiction medicine since 2006. She specializes in providing psychiatric and addiction care to children, adolescents and adults who suffer from psychiatric and/or substance abuse conditions. She is Suboxone Certified and MAT trained. She believes in offering her patients an integrated approach to care, looking at the whole person not just the illness.

Tony Segovia 
Treatment Consultant

Tony graduated from Virginia Tech in 2008 earning his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and has worked in the mental health and marketing fields. He provides marketing and substance abuse case management and is primarily responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with targeted professional referral sources who are qualified to refer to Intercept Health’s True North Health Clinic. He then works with individuals, families, and referral sources to provide quick access to treatment and care coordination with Intercept Health’s continuum of care. 

DaRee Ellis 
Office Manager

DaRee has worked in the mental health field since 2006 and has been with Intercept Health’s True North Health Clinic since 2016. DaRee, manages a team of Administrative Assistants and is directly involved with billing as well as credentialing for True North Health Clinic staff.
