What Are Mental Health Skill-Building Services?

Mental Health Skill-Building Services (MHSS) are specialized community-based mental health support services designed to help adults develop the essential life skills needed to live independently. These services focus on strengthening daily living abilities while supporting mental health recovery and long-term stability.

At Intercept Health, our trained MHSS professionals provide individualized, goal-driven support in each person’s home and community. We help clients build the skills to live, work, and function confidently in their preferred environment.

Who Can Benefit from MHSS?

MHSS is ideal for adults aged 18 and older who are living with serious mental illness (SMI) and need help managing symptoms and improving daily functioning.

We work with individuals who may be:

  • Transitioning from hospitals, residential treatment, or correctional facilities

  • Struggling with housing or employment stability

  • Managing co-occurring physical or behavioral health conditions

  • Seeking independence through structured, skill-based mental health support

MHSS Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for MHSS in Virginia, individuals must meet both clinical and functional requirements:

Clinical Criteria

  • Diagnosed with a serious mental illness such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, or Major Depression

  • Require individualized training to maintain stability and prevent hospitalization

Functional Criteria

  • Recent history of hospitalization, crisis stabilization, or residential mental health care

  • Psychotropic medication management within the past year

  • Limitations in at least two of the following areas:

    • Daily living skills (e.g., bathing, cooking, cleaning)

    • Using community resources

    • Managing finances

    • Building social relationships

    • Medication or health management
